History Of The ROO Battalion

The Killeen High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is an Honor Unit with Distinction, which means we are in the top 10% of all JROTC departments in the nation. Last year we scored a 94% on our RFI, or Regional Formal Inspection. At KHS, we take pride in what we do, and have the gold star to prove it.

On September 27, 1966, under the General Order No. 38 from the Department of the Army, a JROTC program was started at Killeen High. This order was to be effective after July 1, 1967. The JROTC program Our first Senior Army Instructor (SAI) was LTC (RET.) Cloud C. Carter who served one year at KHS to help build the foundation of our program. His first year here he started out with 155 cadets who were enrolled in two units. LTC Carter was followed by LTC (RET.) Robert F. Zimmerman who helped build the framework of our program. LTC Zimmerman served 12 years and was followed by MAJ (RET) John W. Henderson who has been here for 17 years. SAI MAJ Henderson and his staff have done a wonderful job of keeping the program at its top status today. The current SAI, LTC (RET) Benda Alicea, former profesor of military science at the University of Texas at Austin, began her career with KHS in the 1998-99 school year.

The cadets at KHS are very competitive throughout the year. Many of our cadets join Special Teams. Here you have a choice to join the following: Male & Female drill team, Male & Female color guard, Honor Guard, Pathfinders, and Rifle team. The first half of the school year is spent preparing and organizing our teams and the second is our compitition season. We attend compititions at FT. Worth, Mesquite (Dallas), San Antonio (Camp Bullis), and our own Heart of Texas Skills(H.O.T.) meet held right here in Killeen. Being a member on one of these teams takes a tremendous amount of hardwork and dedication. These teams helps some of the cadets stay involved in their school work, they give them something they can enjoy and make them give something positive back to the school. Many of the cadets on the Special Teams feel that being on these teams makes them feel the honor that the other cadets in ROTC and others in the school have for them. They also get an excitment by being on one of these teams.
